An Epochal Opportunity for Reform

The Synodal Way of the Catholic World Church

For a synodal Church: community, participation and mission. Under this motto, Pope Francis proclaimed a Synodal Way for the Catholic World Church that began in October 2021 and leads up to the World Synod of Bishops in 2023. The results of the local Church consultations were examined in bishops' conferences, collected by continent and discussed further, leading up to the World Synod of Bishops. This opens up an epochal opportunity for reform, which brings movement into the stagnating World Church. The Church can become what it is: synodal, which means a community that is on the path together.

Even before the Pope's announcement, Paul M. Zulehner launched an intercontinental survey that follows the Pope's lead. Ideas to synodalisation were collected, elements of a theology and spirituality in a synodal Church were explored and proposals for how this can be implemented in the Church structures and its laws were explored. Their findings have been incorporated into this volume, which makes an exciting contribution to the project of synodalising the Catholic Church.
