Values

Foundation and Future of Our Culture

Our values determine what we consider meaningful, what we strive for and who we trust. Living together in a community and even the coexistence of cultures is only possible on the basis of shared values. Passing on values is one – and possibly even the main – concern of education and upbringing. Where moral values differ, respect and tolerance are needed – and these values make peace and solidarity possible even when dealing with opposites. We are hardly aware of some of the values that shape both our ideals and our everyday life. Yet, they still have an impact. For example, the Corona pandemic has become more bearable through consideration, appreciation, patience and solidarity. It has led to people reflecting on whether we want to live differently in the future and give more space to other values. Michael Korth portrays almost 200 values ranging from mindfulness to reliability. In a pointed and entertaining way, he tells about the origins and reasons for values, how we can recognise them and their effects, why they are important and why there are sometimes even fun.
